Stair Components and Complete-Assembly Scope
The product family can include drawing-defined folded components, treads, risers and other parts for stair or step assemblies. A sculptural, folded or spiral appearance does not by itself describe the supporting structure. Identify whether the requirement is for selected steel components or a complete engineered assembly.
The approved design must address the intended location and use. Landscape steps, access stairs and a required escape stair may be subject to different requirements. Do not substitute a decorative stair concept for a specified means of access or egress without the responsible designer’s approval.
Stair and Step Enquiry Checklist
| Requirement | What to specify |
|---|---|
| Geometry | Total rise, number of steps, riser and tread dimensions, clear width, landings and drawing revision. |
| Structure | Design loads, supports, connections, foundations and responsibility for calculations. |
| Walking surface | Slip-resistance requirement, nosing, drainage and any separate tread surface. |
| Protection | Handrails, guards, openings and interfaces with surrounding construction. |
| Material and acceptance | Weathering grade, thickness selected by design, weld details, inspection and coating or finish. |
Provide a site survey or verified setting-out information where the stair connects to existing work. The accepted quotation should clearly identify included parts, required tolerances and the items supplied by others.
Geometry, Slip Resistance and Local Requirements
The relevant building and accessibility requirements must be checked for the destination and the stair’s function. Consistent step geometry, suitable walking surfaces, handrails and other details are not optional appearance decisions. The US Access Board stairway guide is one jurisdiction-specific reference; it is not a substitute for the applicable project rules.
A rough-looking patina does not establish a tested slip-resistance value. Wet conditions, debris, surface treatment and drainage can affect the walking surface. Specify the required performance and any test evidence rather than assuming that exposed steel is suitable under every condition.
Engineering, Fabrication and Inspection
Thickness must be selected for the actual span, support arrangement, loads and fabrication. A small sheet thickness in a product catalogue cannot be treated as a load-certified stair specification. Structural calculations and connection design are separate from the steel’s chemical or tensile properties.
Agree welding procedures, dimensional checks and any additional examination before production. For assembled or multi-part stairs, identify fit-up tolerances and site connections. The installation sequence and temporary support requirements should be established by the responsible installation team.
Exposure and Maintenance Access
Outdoor stairs need drainage that avoids persistent wet pockets and directs run-off away from sensitive finishes. Interfaces with landings, supports and other materials deserve particular attention. Where coatings or separate walking surfaces are required, their compatibility and maintenance should be included in the design.
Ask for access to inspect connections and clean debris from concealed areas. Coordinate the stair with decorative balustrade infill panels only where the complete guard design has been assessed; decorative panels do not independently provide a compliant barrier.
Requesting a Stair-Steelwork Quotation
Send the approved drawings, design criteria, quantity, grade, required documents and delivery location. State whether the offer should include treads, stringers, risers, landings, supports, rails or only selected components.
ASC provides supplier and exporter enquiries against the agreed scope. Engineering approval, inspection, packing, assembly and installation responsibilities must be explicit. No generic load rating, code approval or completed-stair certification is implied before the required evidence is agreed.
Technical and Safety References
US Access Board accessibility guidance. Guidance must be applied to the actual product, location and project; it is not certification of an offered configuration.
International Project Enquiries
ASC welcomes project enquiries from the USA, UK, Europe, Canada, Brazil and other international destinations. Include the delivery location and required date so packing, availability and logistics can be addressed in the quotation.
Corten Steel Stairs and Steps FAQs
Can a sheet thickness establish a stair load rating?
No. Capacity depends on the complete geometry, span, supports, connections, material and design loads. It requires appropriate engineering assessment.
Are these complete stairs or steel components?
The quotation must define the scope. Treads, risers, stringers, landings, rails, supports and installation are separate items unless expressly included.
Is a weathered surface automatically slip-resistant?
No tested value is assumed. Specify the required walking-surface performance for the actual conditions and obtain suitable evidence.
Can a decorative spiral stair be used as an escape stair?
Only if the responsible designer confirms that the complete stair meets the applicable requirements for that use and jurisdiction.
Are handrails and balustrades included?
Only when specified and agreed. The complete protection system and its connections need design review.
Which drawings are required for pricing?
Provide geometry, supports, connections, design criteria, material, walking-surface requirements and a clear component schedule.
Does Corten mean the stair needs no maintenance?
No. Drainage, debris removal, connection inspection and any surface treatments need an appropriate maintenance plan.
