Identifying an H or Wide-Flange Section
H beam is commonly used as a commercial description for broad-flange structural sections. Terminology differs across markets, and a letter or approximate overall size does not uniquely identify the product. State the precise designation and dimensional series used by the design.
Broad flanges can be relevant to column connections and framing layouts, but flange width alone does not determine strength. Check the complete section geometry and properties, including the direction in which the member is loaded and restrained.
Dimensions and Ordering Specification
| Requirement | Details to specify |
|---|---|
| Profile series | Exact H or wide-flange section designation, dimensional standard or approved drawing. |
| Dimensions | Section depth, flange width, web and flange thickness, and relevant corner or root geometry. |
| Column or beam details | Required lengths, end treatment, splice requirements and drawing references where applicable. |
| Grade and documents | Material specification, delivery condition, certificate and impact requirements if specified. |
Provide an approved drawing or recognised section designation where possible. If the requested section is unavailable, any alternative should be identified explicitly and checked against the design before it is ordered.
Section Properties and Design Review
For a column enquiry, include the design section schedule and any end, splice or base-connection requirements. The engineer must consider axial load, bending, effective length, buckling and connection behaviour for the actual structure.
For use as a beam, verify the span, restraint and loading with the required section data. A thicker flange or heavier nominal section is not a substitute for checking the governing design requirements. Material and dimensional substitutions need designer acceptance.
Applications and Related Products
Potential applications include specified columns, building frames and industrial structural assemblies. Whether a particular H section is appropriate for a beam or column is determined by the project design, not by the trade description.
I and H terminology is not completely separate across markets. Compare the exact geometry rather than treating the names as mutually exclusive standards. See Corten steel I beam enquiries for beam-schedule identification and bending-member purchasing considerations.
Weathering-Steel Grades and Technical Properties
Specify the required material grade separately from the section shape. ASTM A588/A588M covers weathering structural shapes, plates and bars; EN 10025-5 addresses structural steels with improved atmospheric-corrosion resistance. These references do not mean that every section offered under the Corten name meets either standard.
Chemical limits, yield and tensile strength, elongation and any impact-test requirements depend on the actual grade, product form, thickness and delivery condition. Review the offered specification and mill documents rather than applying a generic Corten property table. No automatic ASTM/EN equivalence or dual certification is implied.
Include the required inspection certificate and traceability in the enquiry. Grade-specific supporting pages include ASTM A588 material information and S355J2W material information; their flat-product descriptions do not independently certify a structural section.
Exposure, Drainage and Fabrication
Weathering steel needs an appropriate environment and detailing that permits drying. Assess trapped moisture, debris, chloride contamination and the potential for run-off to stain adjacent finishes. A section hidden in a continuously damp enclosure may not behave like freely exposed steel.
Connections and supports should be detailed for drainage and access. Welding and any thermal processing need procedures appropriate to the actual material and service, with the required examination identified in the order. A weathered surface does not replace structural inspection or maintenance planning.
Quotation, Documentation and Delivery
Send the section schedule, material grade, quantity, delivery lengths and destination. Identify any cutting, drilling, surface treatment, inspection or packing requirements. The quotation should distinguish raw material from additional fabrication and should confirm the proposed production route.
ASC welcomes international enquiries as a supplier, exporter and stockist. Current availability and lead time depend on the exact section, grade, quantity and processing. Any certificates, independent inspection or special approvals must be requested and confirmed rather than assumed.
Corten Steel H Beam FAQs
Is an H beam always a column section?
No. Usage depends on the design and local section terminology. Specify the exact profile and its intended role rather than assuming the name establishes the application.
What is the difference between an H beam and an I beam?
The terms can overlap, but H beam commonly describes a broad-flange profile. The precise dimensional designation, geometry and properties are more important than the informal label.
Can I order a wide-flange section by approximate dimensions?
Approximate dimensions may help an initial discussion, but an accepted quotation should identify the exact section or approved drawing, grade, tolerances and lengths.
Is the product automatically ASTM A588 or an EN weathering grade?
No. The ordered material specification and supporting documents must establish compliance. The Corten trade description and the section shape do not independently prove a standard or grade.
Is the section rolled or fabricated?
The production route is confirmed in the quotation against the required specification. This page does not assume that the product is fabricated, rolled or otherwise manufactured by a particular process.
Are chemical and mechanical values the same for every size?
Not necessarily. Requirements depend on the grade, product form, thickness and delivery condition. Use the applicable specification and material certificate for acceptance.
Can weathering steel be used near the sea?
Chloride exposure and persistent moisture require assessment. Suitability depends on the site and detailing, not on the material name alone.
What is needed to obtain a quotation?
Send the exact section designation or drawing, grade, dimensions, lengths, quantity, inspection requirements and delivery destination. Any processing or special packing should be listed separately.
