Bench Formats and Seating Surfaces
Enquiries can cover standalone benches, steel supports with separate seat boards, coordinated stools and seating integrated with planters. Identify whether you need a complete bench or only the steel base, legs or planter component. Timber, composite and other seat surfaces must be specified separately.
Seat length is not the same as an approved occupant capacity. Height, depth, back support and armrest arrangement affect how the bench is used. For a commercial site, show the surrounding circulation space and the intended users rather than relying only on a decorative reference image.
Bench Quotation Checklist
| Requirement | What to specify |
|---|---|
| Geometry | Overall length, seat height and depth, back and armrest details, drawing revision. |
| Contact materials | Steel, timber or other seat surfaces; edge treatment and replacement requirements. |
| Structure | Intended use, loading requirements, supports, fixings and ground conditions. |
| Planter integration | Planting volume, liner, drainage, separation from seat materials and maintenance access. |
| Supply | Assembled or component delivery, quantity, finish, accessories and destination. |
Where several units form a continuous arrangement, include joint details and installation tolerances. The quotation should identify who supplies and installs the foundations or anchors.
Comfort, Accessibility and Public Use
Review surface temperature, clothing contact, rounded or finished edges and any gaps between components. A weathered steel surface can be attractive but may not be the preferred direct-contact seat material for every location. Agree the final treatment and contact surface rather than assuming an uncoated steel seat is appropriate.
Accessibility requirements depend on the type of facility and the rules that apply to it. Specify the required clear space, support features and seating dimensions with the project designer. The US Access Board standards are one jurisdiction-specific reference, not a universal certification of every outdoor bench.
Separating Seating from Soil and Water
A planter bench combines components with different moisture conditions. Soil, irrigation and drainage should not leave the seating supports permanently wet or discharge onto the sitting surface. The liner, drainage outlets and access for cleaning need to be designed as part of the assembly.
Check the fully loaded planter condition and the seating loads together. A decorative planter wall thickness cannot establish the bench’s structural capacity. Related Corten steel planters may be specified as separate units where that better suits maintenance and installation.
Finish, Inspection and Delivery
Specify the weathering-steel grade if controlled by the design, and state whether a raw or agreed pre-weathered surface is required. Identify visible welds, exposed edges and any sample or first-off approval. Material certificates and additional inspection are subject to the agreed order.
Send quantity, drawing, delivery location and required date. Include unloading restrictions, assembly requirements and the intended anchorage. ASC confirms the offered components, availability and lead time in the quotation; no generic public-use load rating is assumed.
Technical and Safety References
US Access Board accessibility guidance; Steel Construction Info technical guidance. Guidance must be applied to the actual product, location and project; it is not certification of an offered configuration.
International Project Enquiries
ASC welcomes project enquiries from the USA, UK, Europe, Canada, Brazil and other international destinations. Include the delivery location and required date so packing, availability and logistics can be addressed in the quotation.
Corten Steel Benches and Planter Benches FAQs
Can the bench combine Corten steel and timber?
That combination can be discussed, but the seat material, fixing method and included components must be identified in the quotation.
Are planter benches supplied with liners?
Only if specified and agreed. Drainage, liners and planting requirements are separate design details.
How many people can sit on a bench?
Capacity depends on the approved design, dimensions and loading requirements. Length alone is not a load or occupancy certification.
Is a Corten bench automatically accessible?
No. Check the applicable facility requirements for seating, support and clear space with the project designer.
Are anchoring and foundations included?
They are included only when the offer explicitly covers them. Site support and installation responsibilities must be agreed.
Can the seat surface stain clothing?
Contact behaviour depends on the surface condition and treatment. Specify the intended contact material and finish, especially for frequently used public seating.
What should be sent for pricing?
Send the drawing, seat dimensions, material combination, quantity, loading and fixing requirements, finish and destination.
