Equal and Unequal Corten Steel Angles
An angle has two legs meeting at a corner. Equal-leg and unequal-leg sections serve different drawing requirements, and their geometry should be identified explicitly. The root and toe details can also matter when an angle fits against another member or carries a connection.
A formed L-shaped strip is not automatically interchangeable with a rolled angle. Manufacturing route, corner geometry, tolerances and material condition can differ. Confirm the specified product form and the proposed supply before accepting an alternative.
Dimensions and Ordering Specification
| Requirement | Details to specify |
|---|---|
| Leg dimensions | First leg × second leg × thickness, with units and section designation where applicable. |
| Form | Equal- or unequal-leg geometry; required rolled or formed route if specified. |
| Order details | Length, quantity, straightness, edge condition and any hole or end-cut schedule. |
| Connection requirements | Hole locations, leg orientation, corner clearance and drawing revision. |
Provide an approved drawing or recognised section designation where possible. If the requested section is unavailable, any alternative should be identified explicitly and checked against the design before it is ordered.
Section Properties and Design Review
Angle connections often transfer load through one leg, making the attachment arrangement important to the structural design. Member length, eccentricity, restraint and hole positions require engineering review; leg size alone does not provide a load rating.
For unequal angles, show which leg attaches to the supporting member and how the section is oriented. The same two leg dimensions can otherwise be interpreted incorrectly during detailing or fabrication. Where paired angles are required, include spacing and connection drawings for the assembly.
Applications and Related Products
Potential uses include specified cleats, framing details, bracing components and architectural edge or support details. The selected geometry, material and connection design determine whether an angle is appropriate for the project.
For alternative shapes, see Corten steel channels and Corten steel flat bars. Changes in section shape or production route require review rather than a simple size substitution.
Weathering-Steel Grades and Technical Properties
Specify the required material grade separately from the section shape. ASTM A588/A588M covers weathering structural shapes, plates and bars; EN 10025-5 addresses structural steels with improved atmospheric-corrosion resistance. These references do not mean that every section offered under the Corten name meets either standard.
Chemical limits, yield and tensile strength, elongation and any impact-test requirements depend on the actual grade, product form, thickness and delivery condition. Review the offered specification and mill documents rather than applying a generic Corten property table. No automatic ASTM/EN equivalence or dual certification is implied.
Include the required inspection certificate and traceability in the enquiry. Grade-specific supporting pages include ASTM A588 material information and S355J2W material information; their flat-product descriptions do not independently certify a structural section.
Exposure, Drainage and Fabrication
Weathering steel needs an appropriate environment and detailing that permits drying. Assess trapped moisture, debris, chloride contamination and the potential for run-off to stain adjacent finishes. A section hidden in a continuously damp enclosure may not behave like freely exposed steel.
Connections and supports should be detailed for drainage and access. Welding and any thermal processing need procedures appropriate to the actual material and service, with the required examination identified in the order. A weathered surface does not replace structural inspection or maintenance planning.
Quotation, Documentation and Delivery
Send the section schedule, material grade, quantity, delivery lengths and destination. Identify any cutting, drilling, surface treatment, inspection or packing requirements. The quotation should distinguish raw material from additional fabrication and should confirm the proposed production route.
ASC welcomes international enquiries as a supplier, exporter and stockist. Current availability and lead time depend on the exact section, grade, quantity and processing. Any certificates, independent inspection or special approvals must be requested and confirmed rather than assumed.
Corten Steel Angle Bar FAQs
What is the difference between equal and unequal angles?
An equal angle has two nominally equal legs; an unequal angle has different leg widths. State both dimensions and show the required orientation on the drawing.
Can a bent flat strip replace a rolled angle?
Only if the specification and designer accept the differences in corner geometry, tolerances, material condition and properties. Do not treat the two forms as automatically identical.
Which leg dimension comes first in an order?
Follow the stated section designation or drawing and identify both legs clearly. For unequal angles, show the mounting orientation so the attachment leg is unambiguous.
Is the product automatically ASTM A588 or an EN weathering grade?
No. The ordered material specification and supporting documents must establish compliance. The Corten trade description and the section shape do not independently prove a standard or grade.
Is the section rolled or fabricated?
The production route is confirmed in the quotation against the required specification. This page does not assume that the product is fabricated, rolled or otherwise manufactured by a particular process.
Are chemical and mechanical values the same for every size?
Not necessarily. Requirements depend on the grade, product form, thickness and delivery condition. Use the applicable specification and material certificate for acceptance.
Can weathering steel be used near the sea?
Chloride exposure and persistent moisture require assessment. Suitability depends on the site and detailing, not on the material name alone.
What is needed to obtain a quotation?
Send the exact section designation or drawing, grade, dimensions, lengths, quantity, inspection requirements and delivery destination. Any processing or special packing should be listed separately.
