ASTM A423 vs A847: Which Steel Tube Does Your Project Need?
ASTM A423 Grade 1 and ASTM A847 address different purchasing requirements. A423 is a low-alloy tube specification used in specified heat-transfer equipment, including economizers. A847 addresses weathering-steel structural tubing. A similar appearance, diameter or commercial description such as “Corten tube” does not make them interchangeable.
The first question on an enquiry should therefore be what the tube does. Does it form part of a heat-recovery assembly, or does it carry loads in a frame, post or other structural member? That answer directs the buyer to the right specification and the documents needed to support acceptance.
A423 and A847 at a glance
| Buying question | ASTM A423 Grade 1 | ASTM A847 |
|---|---|---|
| What is the main product context? | Low-alloy tubing for specified equipment and corrosion-resistant duties | High-strength, low-alloy structural tubing with enhanced atmospheric-corrosion resistance |
| What applications should start the discussion? | Drawing-specified economizer or air-preheater tube replacement | Engineered frames, columns, bracing and exposed structural members |
| What does ASC offer in this comparison? | Welded round tubes | Round, square and rectangular structural-tube enquiries |
| What information drives the RFQ? | Equipment specification, outside diameter, minimum wall, length and inspection requirements | Finished-tube standard, section dimensions, wall, length and structural project requirements |
| Can one replace the other? | Only after an authorized technical review of the complete requirement | Only after an authorized technical review of the complete requirement |
The scope distinction is reflected in ASTM’s public records for A423/A423M and A847/A847M. The standard edition named in the purchase order remains important.
When to enquire about ASTM A423 Grade 1
Start with A423 when an equipment drawing or approved material schedule calls for it. For a replacement purchase, identify the equipment maker, drawing revision, tube location and previous material records. A handwritten note saying “Corten boiler tube” leaves too much unresolved for a reliable order.
Amardeep Steel Centre LLP supplies welded round ASTM A423 Grade 1 tubes for specified economizer, air-preheater and heat-recovery requirements. Outside diameter, wall basis and finished length should be stated separately. The available combination is confirmed in the quotation.
Pay particular attention to minimum wall. An enquiry that gives only a nominal thickness may not express the designer’s requirement. Copy the wall basis from the approved specification, and ask the supplier to identify any departure rather than silently treating the two descriptions as equivalent.
Also distinguish the material order from equipment design. A tube certificate does not establish the allowable pressure or temperature of the completed assembly. Those decisions depend on the applicable design rules, operating conditions, fabrication and inspection.
When ASTM A847 is the relevant route
A847 belongs in the conversation when the purchased tube is a structural member and improved atmospheric-corrosion resistance is specified. The enquiry needs enough information to identify the actual section: outside diameter for a round tube, or width and depth for a rectangular section, followed by wall thickness and length.
For an exposed frame, the material grade is only one part of the order. Drawings should also resolve connections, member orientation, end treatment and any project-specific testing. If the structure has a demanding toughness requirement, put that requirement into the enquiry rather than expecting a generic weathering-steel description to cover it.
ASC’s ASTM A847 structural tubing page is the appropriate product destination for those enquiries. A structural tube’s specification should remain traceable through cutting and fabrication, especially when several section sizes arrive together.
Why “Corten tube” is too broad for a purchase order
Commercial language is useful for starting a search, but it can combine products with different acceptance requirements. An outdoor architectural section, a replacement heat-transfer tube and a component fabricated from weathering plate may all be described informally as Corten steel.
Convert that description into a defined order before comparing prices. Record the standard, grade where applicable, construction, dimensions, delivery condition and required documentation. A supplier’s quotation should answer each line, with exceptions identified clearly.
The distinction also matters when ordinary carbon-steel HSS appears among alternatives. ASTM A500 structural tubes have their own specification and grade requirements. Neither a rust-brown finish nor the presence of copper in a certificate is, on its own, proof of A847 compliance.
Review substitution requests as a complete package
Suppose a supplier offers an available structural tube against an urgent A423 requirement. The matching diameter may look attractive, but the substitution request still needs review against the equipment’s material, dimensional and testing requirements. Availability does not settle those questions.
Use a simple comparison sheet:
- Original requirement: list the approved standard, edition, grade and drawing reference.
- Proposed alternative: record exactly what the supplier will certify.
- Differences: identify material, wall basis, tolerances, condition and test-document changes.
- Engineering decision: obtain acceptance or rejection from the responsible designer or equipment authority.
- Purchase-order revision: incorporate the approved decision before release.
This keeps a commercial negotiation from becoming an undocumented engineering change. If no substitution is permitted, say so in the RFQ.
Keep equipment and structural items separate in a mixed purchase
A plant shutdown may require replacement tubes and new support steel at the same time. Give the two groups separate line items, even if one supplier handles both. Equipment tag numbers belong with the replacement tubes; structural member marks belong with the support sections.
Request a packing list that preserves those identities. On receipt, the team should be able to connect each bundle to the correct purchase-order line and supporting material records without guessing from colour or section shape.
For equipment replacement enquiries, use the ASTM A423 Grade 1 product page to connect the material requirement with the tube dimensions and documentation.
Frequently asked questions
Is ASTM A847 a direct replacement for ASTM A423 Grade 1?
No automatic replacement should be assumed. The standards address different product requirements. A proposed alternative needs review against the equipment or structural design, dimensions, condition, tests and documentation before the order changes.
Can A423 Grade 1 tubes be ordered for any air preheater?
Only where the equipment specification accepts that material. Confirm the air-preheater design and approved tube schedule first. The equipment name alone does not establish the correct grade or construction.
Does A847 mean the tube can be left unpainted everywhere?
No. Exposure and detailing must support the selected corrosion strategy. Persistent moisture, deposits and chloride contamination require particular attention. The engineer may specify additional protection even when a weathering grade is used.
Is an ASTM certificate enough when the drawing names ASME SA423?
Do not assume that it is. Identify the applicable ASME requirements and Code edition, then request the required certification explicitly. An ASTM-only designation does not by itself demonstrate dual certification or acceptance for the intended Code construction.
What should I send to obtain a useful quotation?
Send the standard and grade, drawing reference, construction, outside dimensions, wall basis, finished length, quantity, documentation requirements and destination. Include the required delivery date, distinguishing site arrival from dispatch.
Request a product-specific tube offer
Amardeep Steel Centre LLP is a supplier, exporter and stockist supporting equipment-tube and structural-tube enquiries. Send the approved specification and dimension schedule so the offer can address the right product, inspection scope, packing and destination. For urgent replacements, include the outage date and any restrictions on alternative materials.
