1020 is a low tensile low hardenability general purpose carbon steel typically provided in the cold drawn/turned and polished state, with a typical range of tensile strength of 410 – 790 Mpa, and Brinell hardness range of 119 – 235.
1020 steel grade, which follows the AISI standard, is a common grade of steel and has many equivalents in different countries as follows:Â
DIN (Germany): C20 or CK22.Â
EN (British): 070M20.Â
JIS (Japan): SWRCH20A.Â
ASTM: A29/A29M.Â
Each of the above steel grades have similar chemical compositions and properties as 1020 steel.
1020 is carburized by heating to 1700 F and then water quenching. It should then be tempered. More frequently it is perhaps used as case carburized. The expense of conducting any heat treatment of such low carbon steel would generally not be justified by the low gain in mechanical properties realized.
