SAE 1020 commonly used plain carbon steels, recognized for its reliability and widespread applications. With a nominal carbon content of 0.20% and an approximate 0.50% manganese composition, SAE 1020 strikes a harmonious balance between strength and ductility, offering a versatile solution in various industrial settings.

AISI 1020, also recognized as C1020 steel, takes center stage in cold-worked conditions, encompassing both cold-rolled and cold-drawn states. This form of 1020 carbon steel stands as one of the most widely utilized plain carbon steels, renowned for its commendable machinability and weldability. SAE AISI 1020 mild steel exhibits adaptability, seamlessly transitioning between hot-rolled and cold-drawn states, often finding its place in turned and polished or cold-drawn conditions. Notably, its low carbon content renders it resistant to induction hardening or flame hardening processes.

AISI 1020 steel proves its mettle in a spectrum of applications, offering versatility and reliability. Semi-finished products, including square steel bars, flat steel bars, and round steel bars, serve as the building blocks for crafting truck, automotive, and agricultural equipment components. From axles and mechanical parts to cold head bolts and motor shafts, AISI 1020 plays a pivotal role. Its adaptability extends to crafting ratchets, light gears, gear drives, worm gears, spindles, seat brackets, crane-cable drums, motor-brake wheels, and more. Moreover, it finds expression in steel channels, angles, I-beams, and H-beams.

The forging process for C1020 typically commences around 2300ºF (1260ºC) and progresses down to approximately 1650ºF (900ºC). The actual forging and finishing temperatures hinge on factors such as overall reduction during forging and the intricacy of the part being forged. Experience becomes a guiding factor in determining precise values for these parameters. Post-forging, parts undergo air cooling.
