Cortensteeltube.com produces round carbon and alloy electric resistance welded (ERW) mechanical tubing to ASTM specifications A513 Type 1A (hot rolled), Type 1B (pickled and oiled) and Type 2 (cold rolled). Produced in sizes ranging from 1.05″ OD up to 12.75″ OD and in nominal wall thicknesses beginning at 18-gauge (0.049″) and heavier, Valmont’s ASTM A513 tubing is used in a variety of industrial, agricultural and transportation-related end uses. For a complete listing of sizes produced, please visit our Steel Tubing Product Catalogue.
ASTM A513 Equivalent is DIN 17175 Grade 16Mo5, ASTM A513, ASME SA513 ASTM A513 specification covers electric-resistance-welded carbon steel tubing for use as mechanical and ornamental tubing. The ultimate tensile strength of SA 513 Material is calculated by dividing the area of the steel by the stress placed on it, which is expressed in terms of pounds or tons per square inch of material. Tensile strength is also an important measure of its ability to perform in an application.
SA 513 is a commercial and residential product which needs a tough and durable metal tubing structure that supports the ruggedness of its applications. ASTM A513 T5 is highly durable which provides robust structural support for the heavy-duty metal products that are used every day. ASTM A513 Type 1 is manufactured from low carbon steel. Which is typically available in hot rolled black and hot rolled. It is produced to closer dimensional tolerances than A500 and chemistries that allow for bending. It is used for furniture, machine components, storage racks, fences, etc.
ASTM A513 Tubing provides numerous advantageous qualities to a wide range of industries throughout the world. Some of the most distinct beneficial qualities of SA 513 Tubing are durability, work to tight tolerances and less costly. ASTM A513 Chemical Composition is iron with added carbon, phosphorus, manganese, silicon, and silver. SA 513 Steel Tubing is used in a variety of agricultural, industrial, and transportation related end uses.
ASTM A513 Type Tubing is manufactured by using high quality carbon steel C1020 strip and it is formed and electric resistance welded into its basic shape. After annealing to produce a uniform grain structure all round, over a mandrel it is then cold drawn to give it these advantages: uniform concentricity around the central axis, denser surface, closer tolerances, uniform wall thickness, and higher physical properties.
Our mechanical tubing is at work in an extraordinary range of markets and applications, including:
- Solar torque tube
- Seat framing
- Furniture
- Exercise equipment
- Lawn & garden equipment
- Display cases
- Fabric structures
- Greenhouse heater tubes
- Utility trailers

Specification Notes
ASTM A513 covers carbon steel grades starting at 1008 and higher in addition to specified alloy steels. Please visit our Finishes & Chemistries page for a listing of our standard chemistry capabilities.
Physical testing (yield, tensile and elongation) is not required under A513. If there is a specific strength requirement for your application, please be sure to include it at the time of inquiry as that will affect the chemistry required.
Flash control of the ID weld bead is discussed in section 12.3 to 12.3.4 of the specification. Valmont produces tubing to flash control 0.015″ maximum, 0.010″ maximum, 0.005″ maximum and flash in.
Valmont does not produce tubing to meet ASTM A513 Type 3, 4, 5 and 6. Depending upon actual tolerances requested; however, Valmont’s ability to produce tubing to tolerances tighter than A513 Type 1 and 2 allows us to explore options to replace ASTM A513 Type 5 DOM (drawn over mandrel) tubing. Please inquire with one of our knowledgeable salespeople if your needed tolerances lie between A513 Type 1 or 2 and A513 Type 5 so that we can explore alternatives to draw over mandrel.
ASTM A787 is a related mechanical tubing specification that covers metallic coated (galvanised, hot-dip galvanised, aluminized and galvannealed) carbon steel tubing. Please refer to the ASTM 787 page for more information.
Heat Analysis
An analysis of each heat of steel shall be made by the steel manufacturer to determine the percentages of the elements specified; if secondary melting processes are employed, the heat analysis shall be obtained from one remelted ingot or the product of one remelted ingot of each primary melt. The heat analysis shall conform to the requirements specified, except that where the heat identity has not been maintained or where the analysis is not sufficiently complete to permit conformance to be determined, the chemical composition determined from a product analysis made by the tubular manufacturer shall conform to the requirements specified for heat analysis. When requested in the order or contract, a report of such analysis shall be furnished to the purchaser.

Uses of ASTM A513 Tubes
A513 is a standard specification for electric-resistance-welded mechanical tubing made of carbon steel and alloy steel. Designed for use in mechanical applications where dimensional accuracy and precision tolerances are critical, this specification covers round, square, rectangular, and special shape tubing.
ASTM A513 tubes are commonly used for:
- Automotive and transportation industries: ASTM A513 tubes are widely used for steering columns, drive shafts, and suspension components in the automotive and transportation industries.
- Tubes that conform to ASTM A513 can be found in the construction industry for applications such as building frames, scaffolding, and other structural parts.
- Various types of industrial machinery and equipment are made with ASTM A513 tubes, such as conveyor systems, cranes, and hoists.
- Tubes manufactured according to ASTM A513 are used in the manufacture of agricultural equipment, including irrigation systems, planters, and cultivators.
- As a result of ASTM A513 tubes, furniture and decorative items like chairs, tables, and ornamental fences are manufactured using them.
In general, ASTM A513 tubes are versatile and widely used in many industries and applications that require high strength and durability.
Advantages of ASTM A513 Tubes
Among the advantages of ASTM A513 tubes are:
- ASTM A513 tubes are made of carbon and alloy steel, which ensures their strength and durability. Their high strength and resistance to wear and tear make them suitable for a wide range of applications.
- As a result of the precision manufacturing processes used to manufacture ASTM A513 tubes, dimension accuracy and consistency are assured. They are therefore ideal for applications requiring precision tolerances, such as those in the automotive and aerospace industries.
- Using ASTM A513 tubes, you can weld or manipulate them easily due to their electric-resistance welding. As a result, tubes can be customized easily to meet the needs of specific applications.
- In comparison with other high-strength materials such as titanium and stainless steel, ASTM A513 tubes are relatively inexpensive. For applications requiring high strength and durability, these are a cost-effective option.
- Round, square, rectangular, and special shape ASTM A513 tubes are available in a variety of shapes, which makes them versatile and suitable for use in a wide range of applications.
There are many mechanical applications for ASTM A513 tubes, because they combine strength, dimensional accuracy, weldability, and versatility.
Disadvantages of ASTM A513 tubes
There are many advantages of ASTM A513 tubes, but there are also some disadvantages to consider, including:
- ASTM A513 tubes have a high corrosion resistance because they are made of carbon steel and alloy steel, both of which are susceptible to corrosion if not properly protected. Therefore, they may not be suitable for marine environments, where corrosion resistance is critical.
- Tubes made to ASTM A513 are typically available in smaller sizes and thicknesses than other types of steel tubing. As a result, they may not be suitable for larger applications or thicker walls.
- The availability of ASTM A513 tubes may not be as widespread as other types of steel tubing, which makes sourcing them for certain applications or in certain regions difficult.
- ASTM A513 tubes have a rougher surface finish than other types of steel tubing, so they may not be suitable for applications requiring a smooth surface.
Despite ASTM A513 tubes’ many advantages, they may not be suitable for all applications due to their limitations in terms of corrosion resistance, size range, availability, and surface finish. Choosing tubing for a specific application requires careful consideration of these factors.
